Spend the morning with the dolphins in Natewa Bay, the South Pacific’s largest bay. Nestled between the pristine waters of Salt Lake, enjoy “dolphin calling” trips when a Fijian boatman “calls” dolphins using traditional magic. It’s said to work every time when the bay is flat and calm, and that two pods totalling as many as 100 dolphins can be seen.

Experience a 1.5hr river ride through an enchanting and mystical jungle valley around Vanua River. Sections of the river are fast and fun, others are mellow and relaxing. Head to a mystical volcanic hot pool in the heart of the lush tropical forest to warm up and complete the perfect trip. Hike or mountain bike deep into Vanua Levu stopping off at villages and waterfalls along the way.

Vuna Blowholes – The row of blowholes that line Taveuni’s southern tip are the result of water from the Vuna Reef crashing onto the island’s jagged coastline and rushing into small crevices in the shore’s volcanic rocks. These shallow pits then intermittently spurt water, which sometimes reaches up to 50 meters in height. This unique geological site is particularly dramatic in the wind when gusts sweep the spouting water into a misty white veil.

International Dateline – Though Fiji adheres to the single time convention, enjoy hopping from one day to the next – quite literally – at the International Date Line, which slices straight through Taveuni not far from the town of Waiyevo. A big wooden map of the island, which is cut in two, marks the spot, meaning that west side of the island theoretically exists in one day whilst the east exists in the next.

Tavoro Waterfalls – The Tavoro Falls are a series of three waterfalls dispersed throughout the Bouma National Heritage Park. The first of these is easily accessible, whilst the treks to the second and third are more arduous. Each of these magnificent cascades is sheltered by a lush rainforest awning and has a wonderfully cool natural pool, suitable for swimming in.

Des Voeux Peak – For more adventurous types you can get right off the beaten track – literally – on a trip to Des Voeux Peak, Fiji’s third highest mountain. 4WD access takes you through pre-historic jungle that’s like something straight out of Jurassic Park, complete with mesmerising views. Serious hikers can venture even further to Lake Tagimaucia, a crater lake 823m above sea level where the endemic and extremely rare Tagimaucia flower blooms each year between the months of October and December.

DIVING
 – Taveuni is perhaps most famous for its world-renowned dive sites, which attract both experienced divers and curious snorkelers from around the globe. The Rainbow Reef and Somosomo Straits are both consistently ranked in the world’s top ten scuba sites and it’s not hard to see why. Warm tropical waters alive with corals and more than 1500 species of fish provide the diving experience of a lifetime.

Lavena Coastal Walk – The Lavena Coastal walk, at the very end of the road on Taveuni’s eastern coast, begins with breathtaking beachfront scenery, but soon you’ll be part of your very own jungle adventure. Immerse yourself in the sound of rare native birds. Then swim between the high rock walls of a deep water ravine as you venture upstream to discover secluded waterfalls.

Pearl Farm Tours – Recognised all over the world for their specific natural colours, Fijian pearls are the most sought-after pearls in the world. Visit a pearl farm where you’ll see the nursery where the mature oysters are harvested and the process that follows.

WAITAVALA WATER SLIDE
 – Make like a local at the Waitavala Water Slide. Take a short walk through the forest and follow the lead of the village kids at this natural fun park. You can shoot down the cascading water on a natural rock slide and splash into the pool at the bottom.

GAIATREE’S FOODIE FEASTS
 – Take your tastebuds on a mouthwatering adventure at heavenly Gaiatree Sanctuary. You’ll enjoy the breathtaking hilltop views while feasting on handcrafted seasonal menus and delicious concoctions from their nectar lab.  There’s also a tour of the extensive organic food garden and a chance to help out in the collaborative kitchen if you’re keen.

As well as ever-popular snorkelling and kayaking, the Yasawas are great for sailing. Experience the stunning scenery on board a cruise ship or a chartered yacht, where you’ll get a taste of a different island every day. Swimming, fishing, village visits and campfire barbecues are common activities. The limestone caves of Sawa-i-lau are a great destination for a day trip. Venture into the caves and explore the secrets within. Or, for the more adventurous, you can dive with manta rays on Drawaqa Island and snorkel with sharks on Kuata Island.

The Great Astrolabe Reef which surrounds Kadavu is one of the largest barrier reefs in the world. Whether you want to swim alongside huge manta rays, explore ship wrecks or soar through pristine coral gardens, the Great Astrolabe Reef offers a huge range of underwater experiences.
